Preparing cows for winter
Now that the cows have been home for a while, it is time to check them to see if they are pregnant and prepare them for winter. We bring them in from the pastures and contain them in a corral. We will separate the cows from their calves to ensure that the calves do not get injured while we are checking the cows. Each cow has an ear tag with a number. As we are checking the cows to see if they are pregnant, we will record their ear tag number, apply the dewormer and do an overall health check. We apply a dewormer so that they are kept in the best condition possible throughout the winter. If they develop worms, they will not be healthy. As we go through this process we will know if we have been able to find and bring home all the cows that we took to the summer pasture. We keep very careful records of these cattle.
